Emotions 101

So erm what is an emotion? It’s kind of hard to describe what emotions are. (Although the Oxford dictionary guys had a pretty good go.) Emotions are that thing you feel or that mood that descends.   Perhaps a better question is why do we have emotions? To answer this, consider the following example. Say you see a massive bear, running at you, teeth exposed, growling and spitting phlegm as it pounds the floor heading straight towards you.  This should – all being well – trigger a feeling of fear within you. Fear’s popped up to tell you, ‘hey that bear is a tonne of scary and it’s going to eat you if you don’t do something, like er NOW’. But instead of consciously having to think that, our bodies short cut the process, fear flags and then we know the bear is a danger to us. Bad Emotions Are Sorta Good For You

When we say bad emotions what we really mean is emotions that have the potential to overwhelm us and leave us curled up in a ball on the floor, weeping our eyes out or ones that lead to self-destructive behaviours. You know the one’s I’m talking about, sadness, anger, fear and jealousy would be some of the main trouble makers. The ones that are considered the bad emotions, the ones it’s not ok to express or feel or admit we are currently feeling. It’s just a bit awkward, I mean no one wants to know about that, right? Well I dunno, maybe some people enjoy that. (And it also is perfectly ok to feel and express these emotions.) But when people feel scared or sad or angry or jealous they tend to bottle it up and not express it because they’ve been taught that’s what they should be doing.
